Action de couper, de diviser ou Résultat de cette action. La section d’un tendon, d’un nerf.

Il se dit, dans le langage courant, de l’Une des divisions ou subdivisions dans lesquelles se partage un ouvrage, un traité, un compte, etc. Ce livre est divisé par sections, en tant de sections. Chapitre premier, seconde section.

Il se dit aussi de l’Une des divisions d’une ville, d’un tribunal, d’un conseil, d’une académie, d’un établissement d’enseignement, etc. Au commencement de la Révolution, Paris fut divisé en quarante-huit sections. Le conseil d’état est partagé en sections. La section du contentieux.

Il désigne spécialement, en termes militaires, une Fraction d’un corps de troupe. Les sections d’une compagnie d’infanterie. Une section d’état-major.

Chef de section se dit, en termes militaires, du Gradé qui commande une section. Il se dit aussi, dans certaines écoles, de Celui qui est le premier de sa promotion.

SECTION, en termes de Géométrie, se dit de la Ligne, de la surface suivant laquelle se coupent deux surfaces, un volume et une surface. La section plane d’une sphère est un cercle. Les sections coniques sont les lignes d’intersection d’un plan et d’un cône de révolution.
